The HP-75C and HP-75D were hand-held computers programmable in BASIC, made by Hewlett-Packard from 1982 to 1986.

The HP-75 had a single-line liquid crystal display, 48 KiB system ROM and 16 KiB RAM, a comparatively large keyboard (albeit without separate numeric pad), a manually operated magnetic card reader (2×650 bytes per card), 4 ports for memory expansion (1 for RAM and 3 for ROM modules), and an HP-IL interface that could be used to connect printers, storage and electronic test equipment. The BASIC interpreter also acted as a primitive operating system, providing file handling capabilities for program storage using RAM, cards, or cassettes/diskettes (via HP-IL).

Other features included a text editor as well as an appointment reminder with alarms, similar to functions of modern PDAs.

The HP-75D (1984–1986) added a port for a bar code wand, often used for inventory control tasks.

The HP-75 was comparatively expensive with an MSRP of $995 ($2,014 in 2005) for the 75C or $1095 ($2,058 in 2005) for the 75D, making it less popular than the cheaper successor model, the HP-71B.

HP-48S

The HP-48 is a series of graphing calculators using Reverse Polish notation (RPN) and the RPL programming language, produced by Hewlett-Packard(HP) from 1990 until 2003. The series include the HP-48S, HP-48SX, HP-48G, HP-48GX, and HP-48G+, the G models being expanded and improved versions of the S models. The models with an X suffix are expandable via special RAM (memory expansion) and ROM (software application) cards. In particular, the GX models have more onboard memory than the G models. The G+ models have more onboard memory only. The SX and S models have the same amount of onboard memory.

Note that the similarly named HP-48GII (2004) is not really a member of the series, but rather much more closely related to the HP-49G and HP-49G+.

The hardware architecture developed for the HP-48 series became the basis for the HP-38G, with a simplified user interface and an infix input method, and the HP-49G with various software enhancements. Likewise, the hardware and software design of the HP-48 calculators are themselves strongly influenced by other calculators in the HP line, most of all by the HP-18C and the HP-28 series.

HP 85

The HP-85 was a famous all-in-one computer which met a great worldwide success thanks to its high reliability and ease of use. It featured a 8 bit processor, 16 KB of RAM, a built-in 5″ CRT display, tape drive, thermal printer and four I/O ports.

The HP custom processor had 64 8-bit registers but no accumulators. Even slow, it offered outstanding performances in math calculations.

The display offered a full screen editor and and a ROLL key allowing to scroll the screen window up and down through a 48 line (three full screens) buffer .

The quiet and quite fast printer could print a hard copy of the screen in text or graphic mode as well as direct programs outputs.

The built-in tape cartridge system used a common DC100 data cartridge that could hold 195 KB of program files, binary files or data files. Up to 42 file names could be stored in the directory of the tape. A searching function made a file to be found in less than 1 mn. When the system was switched on, the tape drive automatically searched a program called ‘Autost’ and ran it if found. 

HP also provided a large range of interface modules to be plugged in the expansion slots. The system could then manage several peripherals through GPIB or Serial ports: FDD unit, printers, plotters, etc. A ‘ROM Drawer’ module allowed up to six ROM chips to be inserted. They expanded the capabilities of the internal BASIC interpreter, provided additional languages (Assembler, Pascal), and I/O routines for external devices.

A quite special “feature” of the HP-85 was that the screen blanked whenever the printer was printing or the cartridge was accessed!

David Packard a fost născut pe 7 Septembrie 1912 în Pueblo (Colorado, Statele Unite ale Americii).

În 1939 a fondat împreună cu prietenul său  William Hewlett, propria sa companie “Hewlett-Packard Company”  într-un garaj din Palo Alto, California , dedicată inițial pentru fabricarea de testare electronică și echipamente de măsurare, primul contract  a fost cu compania”Walt Disney”. Packard in anii 1947 – 1964 s-a mentinut în calitate de președinte al companiei. Din 1964 până în 1968 a deținut funcția de președinte al Comitetului Executiv.  David a lucrat cu reforma aparatului militar și de apărare, în care  a introdus criterii economice și comerciale în autoritate.  Compania a crescut pentru a deveni cel mai mare producător de testare electronice și instrumente de măsură. În plus, compania a fost lider in productia de calculatoare, calculatoare personale, cu laser și cu jet de cerneală . Packard a făcut o societate a sa printr-un management  deschis și comunicativ într-o companie de succes. In 1995, el a consolidat (mitgeschaffene) o baza de peste 100.000 de angajati si o cifra de afaceri de 31 miliarde de dolari. În 1995 a primit Premiul Lifetime achivement de la Premiul Lemelson-MIT. In 1960 a fondat”David si Lucille Packard Fundatia” avind un capital de  miliarde de euro  pentru granturi  David Packard a murit la 26  Martie 1996 in Stanford.

Patricia Dunn, fosta sefa a companiei Hewlett Packard a murit, la varsta de 58 de ani, in urma unei lungi batalii cu cancerul.

Patricia Dunn s-a remarcat prin formidabila sa ascensiune profesionala, de la o simpla dactilografa la o banca de investitii, la elita mediului corporatist din Statele Unite, informeaza AFP.

Patricia Dunn a fost una dintre cele mai puternice femei din mediul corporate american.

“Prin felul ei de a fi un lider, prin curajul si calmul de care a dat dovada atat in viata ei profesionala, cat si in cea personala, a fost un exemplu pentru noi toti”, a continuat Lammers.

Perioada in care Dunn a condus HP a fost una din cele mai provocatoare si mai controversate de la infiintarea companiei din Palo Alto, in 1939.

Dunn, o absolventa a Universitatii Berkeley din California si-a inceput cariera ca dactilografa la o banca de investitii, reusind sa transforme acest angajament pe doua saptamani intr-un job full-time si reusind, apoi, sa urce in functie, castigandu-si o reputatie deosebita printre oamenii de afaceri.

Viata personala a fostei sefe a HP nu a fost una neaparat fericita.

Chiar in momentul in care Patricia Dunn si-a atins varful carierei profesionale, ca director al Barclays, a fost diagnosticata cu cancer la san si melanom.

Doi ani mai tarziu, a fost diagnosticata cu cancer ovarian, si in toamna lui 2006 a suferit o operatie pentru extirparea tumorii care intrase in metastaza, la trei saptamanii inainte ca scandalul care avea sa-i aduca demisia de la HP sa fie facut public.

Dunn si-a depus demisia din functia de director al Hewlett Packard in urma unei investigatii privind ascultarea telefoanelor membrilor consiliului director al HP, in incercarea de a identifica angajatii care ofera informatii catre mass-media.

Dunn a decedat duminica dimineata, la resedinta sa din Orinda, inconjurata de familia sa, a declarat sora defunctei, Debbie Lammers. Aceasta a mai mentionat ca decesul a fost provocat de cancer ovarian.
